NEW BRITAIN – The city’s Common Council met Wednesday night and discussed a resolution that would amend a portion of Chapter 17 of the city’s Code of Ordinances regarding park use. The change proposes residents be required to obtain a permit from the board of Park and Recreation commissioners to reserve any area or place in any park for special or private use by groups of more than 25 persons. The proposed change would also require that applicants submit requests at least 60 days prior to the event.

After a spike in adults and children seeking mental health treatment during the pandemic, a “Recovery For All” coalition of lawmakers, union leaders and providers are calling on Gov. Ned Lamont and legislative leaders to increase funding and access to services.children and adults by diverting them away from prison and towards stable housing, mental health & addiction services and employment.”

NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain Racial Justice Coalition continued its battle to create racial equality in the city and create a place that is safer for all people. The group held a rally outside city hall to spread messages of changes it wants to see in the city and important ways to help influence these changes.

 The issue of moving the statue has been the subject of intense debate for months, with community activists advocating for this removal. The New Britain Racial Justice Coalition has been advocating for the city to remove the statue since July. The group held a protest against the statue in July and has been pressing for its removal since. 

NEW BRITAIN – An invitation for a free breakfast with a side of good conversation is being sent out by the New Britain Racial Justice Coalition.

Set for Saturday, Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. at Right Now Ministries, 147 W. Main St., the free breakfast is a collaboration between the coalition and the ministry to build community relationships, to have conversations, and to educate each other.

New Britain residents will get to offer their opinions next week on just what powers a civilian review board should — and shouldn’t — have.

Similar to Hartford, New Britain has widespread support for creating a local police accountability board made up of civilians. But in both cities, there are big disagreements over what authority they should get.
